Walk the isles of any supermarket and you’ll see tons of shit with the word “paleo” or “paleo friendly” on it. Not to be confused with “keto” or “keto friendly” which is usually also paleo but not necessarily. It can seem a bit confusing because how are pork rinds paleo? Right? They’re processed and certainly not what our ancestors ate. So like any nutritional approach, there are let’s say disagreements about what is and isn’t allowed. And I use the term “allowed” carefully here because it’s a lifestyle and not a fad diet. And many people who do embrace the Paleo or Primal lifestyle do so with an 80/20 approach or they allow themselves to have days off or meals off. In fact, I tend to eat 100% paleo except one meal each weekend when my husband and I go out to eat. That meal can sometimes become an entire day, but for the majority of the week I stick to whole, paleo, foods.

Nonetheless, let’s dig in and get specific.  What are you allowed to eat on the paleo diet?

Eat the Following Foods:

  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fish and seafood
  • Grass fed meats
  • Healthy oils
  • Eggs
  • Herbs and spices

(Primal also allows organic grass fed dairy)

Don’t Eat the Following Foods

  • Refined sugar
  • Refined vegetable oils
  • Cereal grains
  • Legumes
  • Peanuts
  • Dairy products
  • Potatoes
  • Rice
  • Processed food
